What to Expect


My initial consult with you is a full 90 minutes, the longest consult you will have with me.  We use that time to get mutually acquainted.  I need to know as many details as possible about the course of events and health challenges that have led you to consult with me.  You will start to become familiar with the construct and particulars of the Functional Medicine approach toward establishing your optimal health.

Your first follow-up consult is timed 1 month after the first and is an hour long. That consult is used to review all your laboratory testings (you get your own copies of all reports)  An initial treatment plan is composed based on the specifics of your history plus the results of your tests.

The second follow-up consult happens 1 month later again. Its purpose is to discuss progress made and to revise specifics of what I have prescribed and advised initially.  This consult is 30-60 minutes long depending on the complexity of your needs.

Ensuing follow-up consults occur at 4-5 week intervals and again are for the purpose of fine-tuning your treatment plan. They will be 30-60 minutes long, again in accordance with the complexity of your needs.

I do not offer primary care. My work doesn’t include, hospital care or emergencies. For this purpose you must keep primary care physician relationship. I do not accept direct insurance payment, but I do provide itemized receipts that you may send to your insurance to help facilitate reimbursement to you . Some of the lab test I rely on may be covered by insurance plan and some of the labs I utilize offer 3rd party insurance billing, so I do ask you to provide your insurance card that we may keep a copy of on file to send with any lab testing that this applies to. It is my heartfelt desire that you experience all the excellence of health possible I look forward to our time spent together in the quest for your greater expression fo health and vitality!

Vivian Varese, MD is a physician who specializes in functional medicine in Acton, Massachusetts. Dr.  Varese has been in private practice since 1984 dedicated in her work as a healer physician. Dr. Varese attended medical school at the Medical School of the Autonomous University at Guadalajara, Mexico. She graduated in 1979 and completed her 4 years of internship and residency at New York Beekman Hospital in New York City. Since 1984 she has conducted her medical practice in Acton, Massachusetts, offering integrated services including nutrition, herbology, homeopathy, and flower essences with special emphasis on optimizing hormonal, digestive and immune functions through the most natural means possible and with minimal use of pharmaceuticals.

In 1989 Dr. Varese began to incorporate hands-on healing modalities into her medical practice. She began with Reiki for which she acquired Third Degree Mastery. A variety of direct-healing modalities were added to and combined with her use of Reiki each year until 1992 when she experienced Jin Shin Jyutsu. In 1993, the doctor attended three 5-day intensive Jin Shin Jyutsu courses, acquiring practitioner accreditation in a brief period of time. Repeat and specialized courses have been attended and added to her experience since that year. From then to the present day Jin Shin Jyutsu remains a vital part of Dr. Varese’s daily practice.

Primary care, in its usual sense, is not offered by Dr. Varese. For this purpose, you must maintain your relationship with your primary care physician.  Dr. Varese has always utilized a comprehensive assessment of the major body systems along with diet and lifestyle evaluation in order to coordinate traditional and non-traditional resources to design each patient's plan for optimal function.  Other medical specialists, as well as non-MD practitioners, may also be enlisted to compose the healthcare team that best meets each person's specific needs.

Bioenergetic Medicine

  • Flower Essences

    As each patients situation may require, I offer the use of Flower Essences as an added resource in a comprehensive treatment plan.  Flower Essences are liquid preparations of water instilled with the essence or core vibration of a flowering plants petals to deliver keynote qualities that may have been lost from ones overall mental-emotional make-up.  By working on the mental and emotional states, Flower Essences relieve stress and help remove roadblocks to the overall healing process.  Flower Essences are completely safe and combine easily with all other components of any treatment plan.



    Jin Shin Jyutsu

    Jin Shin Jyutsu is an ancient healing art that is well suited to our modern times.  Jin Shin Jyutsu has been part of my practice since 1993.


    A key feature of Jin Shin Jyutsu is that it can be used at home as self-help, thus adding to your resources toward feeling at your best!


    I teach most of my patients a bit of Jin Shin Jyutsu during a consult as well as in occasional class settings.

    I also offer personal 1-hour sessions at my office.
